I was born and raised in Dothan, Alabama. My grandmother opened an antique store there 42 years ago, Antique Attic, and is now being run by 3 generations (my mother and brother). Growing up, our family vacations were always buying trips abroad. Agents in various countries would drive us to warehouses filled with beautiful antiques. Once the container of furniture would arrive in Alabama, I would help sell the furniture. I appreciate learning the entire process of finding antique furniture in Europe, learning the history of the different styles and designs, and finding it a home. This is how I developed my love of interior design. At the store, I always got the biggest thrill when designers or architects would bring in floor plans in order to either fill the home with antiques or even build the home around a large piece of furniture. I would watch in awe. In 1997, I was 13 years old when my parents built our house, and they let me design my room. I enjoyed working side by side with both the decorator and architect. This is when I knew I wanted a career in interior design.
Introduction to this blog:
Now, I am a SCAD "student of design" living, breathing, and fulfilling my passion by working to become a designer myself. This blog was created for my Interior Design 102 : Form, Space, and Order class, and is intended to enrich my design vocabulary through the exploration, study, and application. It is meant to be a tool kit that can be used to assist in the design the design of any space. It will be an overview of the elements, principles, systems, and orders that constitute the visual language of "Design" and are incorporated as the tools that create the physical world surrounding us. The blog is a documentation of of my interior design learning process and will be updated weekly over the course of the 10 week quarter.
