Concluding Thoughts
I realize now, as the end of the quarter nears, how much I have learned. Our final project has made me think about all the terms and concepts together as a whole. I learned all of this through diagramming, diagramming, diagramming! We have diagrammed anything and everything. This is visible throughout this blog! I know this will help me in the future in order to think about designs more logically.
Form & Space
Form and Space : The Unity of Opposites
Earlier, I defined form as the three dimensional mass that is outlined by shapes. Space is the three dimensional - field in which the mass has a position and direction.
The Baumschulenweg Crematorium in Berlin, Germany expresses the relationship between positive and negative elements of form and space.
The form of the building relates to the surrounding space by enclosing space within its volume.
Form Defining Space:
The volume of space can be defined by 3 dimensional forms that articulate visual planes. Here are a few ways :
with Horizontal Elements - Elevated Base Plane
The Elevateed Base Plane of the LOVE statue in NYC defines the boundaries and interrupts the flow of space surrounding.
with Vertical Linear Elements - L - Shaped Plane
The mountain, or wall plane, and the corner of the stage of Red Rocks Amphitheater outward generates space.
Qualities of Architectural Space : View
View is the focus of the space. Having this oriented externally, you have a view of the outdoors and its surroundings.
Wrights Falling Water has a sequence of long, narrow, horizontal openings to view the outdoors.
Openings in Space-Defining Elements : Within Planes
The variety of the size, number, and location of the windows provides random views and ventilation.
